The Rock of Gibraltar is a peninsula and is located off the southwestern tip of Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. It is 426 meters high and covers approx 6 sqkms. It is home to around 250 apes, they are the only wild monkeys found in Europe. In ancient times, the Rock of Gibraltar was known as one of the Pillars of Hercules. In 711 it was taken by the Muslim Arabs and got his name Gibraltar from the Arabian Berber chieftain and still bears his name. (Djebel al-Tarik = mountain of Tarik)
The Rock belongs to the United Kingdom and borders Spain, for the crossing of the border one needs a valid passport!
